Tricare Dental Plan
What is Tricare Dental?
Tricare Dental is a dental insurance program for active duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, their families, and survivors. It offers comprehensive coverage for a wide range of dental services, including routine check-ups, cleanings, and major dental procedures.
How does it work?
Tricare Dental coverage is available through two different programs: Tricare Active Duty Dental Program for active duty service members, and Tricare Dental Program for family members and survivors. Both programs offer access to a network of dentists and specialists, but beneficiaries also have the option to see non-network providers.
Who is Eligible for Tricare Dental?
Eligibility for Tricare Dental is primarily based on the sponsor’s military status. Active duty service members are automatically enrolled in the Tricare Active Duty Dental Program, while family members and survivors must enroll in the Tricare Dental Program separately. In general, those eligible for Tricare medical coverage are also eligible for Tricare Dental.
What about retirees?
Retired service members and their families are not eligible for Tricare Dental coverage. However, they may be eligible for dental coverage under the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), which offers a range of dental plans for federal employees, retirees, and their families.
What Does Tricare Dental Cover?
Tricare Dental coverage includes a wide range of services, such as routine exams, cleanings, fillings, root canals, crowns, and orthodontic treatment for dependents. While coverage may vary between the two programs, both offer comprehensive benefits for preventive, basic, and major dental care.
Are there any limitations?
Some procedures may have specific coverage limitations, waiting periods, or require pre-authorization. For example, orthodontic treatment may have age and length-of-service limitations for dependents. It’s important to review the specific coverage details of the Tricare Dental program to understand any limitations or exclusions.
How to Enroll and Use Tricare Dental?
Enrollment in the Tricare Dental Program can be done online or through the mail, and coverage begins on the first day of the month after enrollment. Once enrolled, beneficiaries can schedule appointments with network or non-network dental providers, and generally only need to pay their cost share at the time of service.
Can I change my dental plan?
Beneficiaries have the opportunity to change their dental plan during the annual Federal Benefits Open Season, which is typically held in the fall. Changes made during this period will take effect at the beginning of the following year.
How Much Does Tricare Dental Cost?
Tricare Dental Program premiums are based on the sponsor’s military status and the type of coverage selected. There are different premium rates for active duty service members, family members, and survivors. In addition to premiums, beneficiaries may be responsible for cost shares and deductibles for certain dental services.
Is there a cost for orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment for dependents may have a separate monthly premium, in addition to the standard Tricare Dental Program premium. The amount of the premium will depend on the type of plan chosen and the length of treatment needed.
Overall Benefits of Tricare Dental
One of the key benefits of Tricare Dental is the access to a nationwide network of dental providers, making it convenient for beneficiaries to find a dentist wherever they are located. The program also offers comprehensive coverage for preventive and specialty dental services, helping to maintain good oral health for military families and survivors.
What are the customer service options?
Tricare Dental beneficiaries can access customer service support through the Tricare website, by phone, or through the Tricare Online portal. This allows beneficiaries to get information about their dental plan, find a network provider, or address any questions or concerns about their coverage.
